I was born and raised in BC and moved around the province until the age of 19. I always had feelings that the federal government just wasn't doing enough for our province, I just didn't know how to express what I felt.
I live in Ontario now, but can't stand the way people think. If I was even to ask who is the Premier of BC, most people wouldn't be able to answer. Yet if you ask someone in BC who the Premier of Ontario is, most people would be able to answer. It is, in my mind, sick!
But on the other hand, the western provinces aren't the only provinces that feel the same way. I had a chance to live in New Brunswick last summer and to see how people live. It is the same treatment from the federal government that there as it is in the west, the only difference is they are voting for the wrong political parties! In time they will come to realize it's not just a "Western thing" or a "Quebec thing". It's actually everyone but Ontario. People have no clue in this province, they think Canada is moving along smoothly, but they have a wake up call coming. With movements like yours emerging from the west, I believe that Ontairo will have to open its eyes and to see just how real this is.
For the record, I love the notion of Canada, one united strong country. I just believe that it has gotten so bad that everbody is searching for something different. Maybe, if "We, Canada" had a better electoral riding system that represented all provinces equally in the number of seats in the House of Commons, Canada wouldn't be in the state it is now!
These are my thoughts on the matter, do with them as you wish.

What are we waiting for, the government to take the legistation away so we can't separate? British Columbia has my vote to separate if it comes to drastic measures of this sort. I was amazed to find this site, I will stay tuned to this idea. We have switched from a democratic country to a communist country. Our fathers fought and died to keep this country free. What has the government went and done but took the freedom of all Canadians away.by instilling the views of Ontario onto all of Canada. You tell me, what is free in Canada, you can't buy a firearm, your right has been taken away? We have all been made criminals by the Liberal government. All the men and women that have died for Canada have been for what, so that the government could take our rights away? This is just one little item, what's next on the agenda?
- Gary R.

Seems much better. Haven't had time to read the website in full, but the idea has to be building a concensus around the idea of separation first, and then to work out the political differences within a new union. Good luck...I have had my belly full of Central Canada but would also like to include everyone west of Thunderbay. That way we would truly have a viable economic base to build a new country...by the way, what is your idea for a name? Labels are powerful in attracting people.

I agree that we are being shafted by the federal government, but I will not leave Canada if it means becoming American. I believe in, and relate to, Europe and to the U.K. If you want to become American, count me out. I would wish to remain a commonwealth country and develop tighter ties with Europe and the Pacific rim. If you choose to become part of the ugly United States, then I will be forced to fight you. God save the Queen, and God save British Columbia! Hamilton S113.

I like the idea of separation, but I hope that you can consider getting Alberta and Saskatchewan to join in....maybe even Manitoba would come together with our views. I'm interested to know if such an idea would work, for I think we could all work together for our independence. Please let me know your thoughts on this. Thanks...

As much as I hear the old western angst, I still do not hear any new viable mechanism to build this new society that you speak of. What I believe we need is a sea of change. Legitimate and formal communities, true majority votes, simplified social programs, regional/provincial infrastructure of power, transporation and communications, integrated education institutions, etc.
Instead of complaining at the top, start local promotion of this new vision, not with a disgruntled voice, but with a voice of hope. A real plan involving all.

A couple of thoughts if you're really serious about leaving. I am now a truly committed western separatist. I loath everything east of Sask.
1. Any new party must not have radical elements of either the left or right, it must be either centrist, or allow different groups to form, with the view of putting all politics behind until after separation. The Quebecois have it easier in this regard as most of their followers are very left wing. It should be announced over and over that the only party plank is separation, all other politics will be sorted out as time goes on. Individual wings of the party could form as new parties in incubation, so that we have a left and right party after the split. This way left and right don't bog down the issue of dumping central Canada.
2. Any leader or group must seem to be centrist. Smear and namecalling are unfortunately a viable way of defeating someone or some message. Central Canada's elites will stop at nothing to discredit any new movement.
3. Don't forget Alberta and Sask as partners if they want, but we go regardless of what they do, right?
4. Use the Liberal's own political spin tactics against them at every opportunity.
5. Encourage public statements of dissent, like large billboards in member's yards advocating our position, or denouncing the east.
6. Like Paul Reever and other shit disturbers of the American Revolution, they learned quickly that rhetoric is far more valuable than logic or facts. If you want to win, you got to enflame passions, not logic.
7. The logic must also be there.
8. Find a credible leader that cannot be harpooned easily. I suggest someone who is thought of as being politically correct, but is actually a radical separatist. I can suggest no one, as I simply can't think of a person of stature and leadership that is credible enough. Ralph Klein perhaps could start something, but it is unlikely he would. In B.C., most notable politicians are tainted or should be in jail. Sad, isn't it?
9. Bullsh_t regarding how much tax money could be saved or how short the hospital lines are going to be should start to be sent to papers and T.V. stations immediately. It is not important that the numbers be accurate, just that it might be possible. Exaggeration is a known political instrument.
10. We mustn't allow a new movement to be co-opted like the WCC was. It soon became a rump for disgruntled far right radicals.
I hope you guys are serious,
-Burns

An interesting website, to say the least. Congratulations! Two quick questions:
1. Does your organisation envision complete legal autonomy or some sort of association with the United States?
2. If one considers the fact that until the Nisa'aga (sic?) Treaty British Columbia had yet to negotiate any settlement with native peoples, do you truly believe the legacy of provincial goverments has been superior to federal governments?
Respectfully,

I agree 100% with the view that BC should seperate from Canada. The lack of respect from the federal parties over the years has spawned seperatist feelings in our area. As an independant country we would be able to offer great tourist destinations to the world. We also have a wealth of natural resources to use to build a very stable financial framework for our government to be able to prosper in the global market place. As for finding a suitable leader, just start the referendum process and people will come forward. We are smart enough to choose the best person for the job.

I agree that WE should no longer be part of the Eastern dictators...However just B.C. going on our own......won't work. We need to UNITE the Manitoba, Sask, Alberta, British Columbia and Yukon regions! If we form together as a new country "NEW CANADA" as I would call it, we would become one of the strongest, riches countries in the world! To reach that objective this can be done.
(1) Start rallies in all the above mentioned provinces.
(2) Have backbone to standup and fight!
(3) Set in place a date that WE stop forwarding Taxes to the east.
(4) Set in place a date where none of the above provinces will be under the Eastern leadership!
(5) WE MUST HAVE A PROVINCAL VOTE CONDUCTED IN EACH OF THE MENTIONED PROVINCES ABOVE!
Once the results come in THEN we get ready to form OUR new country Canada!
(6) We must go and take this step and WE will win! In the name of WESTERN FREEDOM we shall reach our goal! So please lets Unite and get the ball rolling I'm ready to set the stage if it is the will of ALL!

Approx. 30 years ago I had a WCC T-Shirt (this was the 1st party that believed in separating) that showed all the western provinces up to Manitoba. Little did I think that it would go full circle. The T-shirt stated "Republic of Western Canada". Back then I was proud of that shirt, eventually it wore out. In this year's election what really got my goat was that only 63% of Ontario voted and they still rec'd 127 Liberal seats. To add fuel to the fire Quebec has language police, and just recently the papers stated that the kids in Quebec won't receive some toys from outside of Quebec because they aren't bilingual. I could go on and on but I just get stressed out.

First I'll start off by asking why the form above asks for a zip code and state? Are you Americans posing as bc'ers or what? I totally support what you're talking about, but, am a bit curious where you stand on marijuana prohibition. We need cannabis and hemp legalized to stop the greenhouse effect and restore our atmoshpere, to convert to fuels for cars, trucks, planes etc., all of our pulp and paper products and virtually replacing 65% of all pharmeceutical drugs out there. Not to mention the other thousand uses it has! If you guys promise me that you will do this I will gladly give you my vote and then some. I look forward to hearing from you, and if you have any questions regarding the controversial hemp prohibition or any of its uses please feel free to ask, I will gladly give you some literature to get you caught up to speed. Thank you for your time

You have some very valid points. But, as a Northern BC resident, all your points about the east forgetting about BC are as valid as the lower mainland/Victoria ignoring and pumping Nothern BC dry. We have been used for our resources, with billions of revenue going south and staying south. Now, because of poor government policies, the North is bleeding from high fuel costs, mill closures, depression level unemployment, crashing house prices, health care in crisis, education disparity, poor roads and the list goes on. The government has forgotten about us, and I say Northern BC should seperate from the South, then we will have prosperity because will we be governed by politicians who understand and care about the North.
- Kim
swirl

Kim - You're right, Northern B.C. is bleeding dry from the East and South. I'd like to make a few important points.
#1 - I will vote for any, and only, the Separation Party that only advocates separation, and leaving politics to our first elected represenatives under our new flag.
#2 - This new country must have one house elected by population, and a Senate elected by regional representation.
#3 - We should have elected crown counsel, elected police chiefs, and an elected president by popular vote.
#4 - B.C. should be split into two to four new provinces in the process.
- Chad

This is great to see a web page like this. However there was talk of the west leaving canada back in the late 60's and into the 70's. Guess what? BC is still part of Canada and most likly to stay. We will contine to get the shaft from the powers that govern this land (Quebec and Ontario) until some party or another says "Bull S--T" we've had enough. We could do it on our own and/or with Alberta and the Yukon. Would I support any move to form our own independent country? Yes. It's long past due.
- Myran
swirl

I am definitely for separation. We must rid ourselves of the socialist/communist Liberals. We can do a lot better on our own with the resources that we have in B.C. Chretien is one of the worst Prime Ministers we have ever had in this country. The next one won't be any better. I also think being part of the U.S. would be a good alternative.

Thanks! it's about time that this was started. We tried to voice our opinion by not voting for the Liberals and they still did not get the message that Canada goes further west than the Ontario border. Maybe something like seperating will let the political parties know that Canada really extends to the Pacific Ocean.

While I do not believe BC should separate from Canada(because I still love this country), I do share your views on provincial sovereignty with the dominion. Lord Acton once stated, "The concentration of powers in the hands of the Dominion is fatal to Canada as it has been known in the past."
What would be the best way to deal with the tyranny of Ottawa is for our Provincial Governments to grow the balls to stand up to Ottawa and the PMO. The Provinces must take back the responsibilities given to them under the Constitution Act. "While BC has been reducing its bureaucracy, the federal government continues to increase its bureaucracy. They now have more bureaucrats in BC, in environment, agriculture, fisheries, parks, forestry, and native affairs to name a few, than we, as a province, which is largely responsible for these functions, as a matter of fact we are responsible for these functions. This duplication has led to billions of dollars of unnecessary spending and thousands of additional bureaucrats all doing the same thing at least twice," said Premier Bill Vanderzalm in 1990.
We must take back what is ours, not by threats of separation, but by simply following the law of the constitution, and making our provincial legislators adhere to that law, taking back what is the province's, INCLUDING Income Tax, Health Care, and whatever else past legislatures have given up to the federalists.
"The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground." -Thomas Jefferson, Anti-Federalist, author of the [American] Declaration of Independence.
- Mark W.
swirl

You should focus a little more tightly: BC needs not only to run from Upper and Lower Canada, but to something: the USA. Along with Albertans, we are natural Americans, and annexation would be the best thing that ever happened to us. For one thing, our dollar would be worth something. For another, no more trade wars. Thirdly, we would deprive Central Canada of their coveted west coast port. Fourthly, we would at last belong to a country that has a raison d'etre other than not being American. Manifest Destiny is Right On. God Bless America!

These are just a few of the ones I have heard of, and I am sure there will be plenty more. There are many individual sovereigntists sites as well as antifederalist sites out there. I find it rather ironic how the west for the last few decades, has paid little attention to the desires of Quebec. Now we are after the same goals. I now look back at the Meech Lake and Charlottetown Accord, and wonder why they failed. Was it because we were giving up too much to federalist powers, or not receiving enough? Were we afraid of change? Did we feel we were conceding too much to Quebec? Whatever the reason, that is past, and now we must concentrate on the future. That future has to involve more Canadians in the decision making process, and remove the autocratic powers of the Prime Ministers Office.

It's always fun to find a page dedicated to free thought, as the founder of Accountability British Columbia, I am also dedicated to a political solution to our problems. It's just that I don't sit on my ass all day talking about it, so far I'm the only Canadian to have attempted two legislative recalls against the mental midgets in the NDP, we barely missed Evelyn Gillespie here in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island.
I am also firmly dedicated to separatism, both here and QuÈbec, contrary to what some of your guest writers have suggested, I'm convinced both provinces have a lot in common, such as our hatred of Ottawa.
Here lies the solution; In B.C. we don't need government approval to separate, we already have the legislation and I fully expect to use it. The recall legislation is actually two parts, the other being the initiative half. With this part of the legislation, you only need 10% of the voters to sign a petition and it goes to a referendum, this includes ALL provincial laws. Including the original act of 1872 that joined us to Canada.
In fact, if 50%+1 voted to abolish the above act, British Columbia would effectively be a sovereign state. QuÈbec eat your heart out, no such legislation exists there. Therefore, instead of endless chatter on the benefits of being masters in our own home, we can do something about with a little effort. We must support legislative initiatives that propose independence for B.C., or for that matter any initiative that abolishes such stupidity as ICBC or photo radar, sorry C68 is federal.
One last note, I was there in QuÈbec, sitting side by side with the creators of separatism and the one thing I'm convinced of is that the federal morons will do anything to keep the east and west fighting, for us to unite on any concept would be disastrous to them. If we fight QuÈbec, we will lose, if we learn that we've been scammed for decades and accept that, we will have allies across Canada. Your Website is a bit too optimistic and reactionary. Nevertheless, separation, and becoming a country of our own, is a topic that must be addressed now. We do most definitely need an intelligent and open debate. This debate is past due and must be entered into with the courage and determination of our pioneering and immigrating grandparents. The first priority is to establish an information network that is not controlled by the east. The next is to draft a constitution that would become our election platform in the upcoming election. A good beginning, from my perspective, would be the proposed platform that Reform BC had, but, is unwilling to act on. I am convinced that a well reasoned and articulated separatist platform, combined with an economically and socially conservative perspective, would receive an overwhelming endorsement in the upcoming provincial election. Keep me informed - Thanks

Interesting concept, this idea of separating from Canada. I think the idea is well worth pursuing. A unity of BC, Alberta, Yukon, and Sask. forming their own country sounds very enticing. I would not like us to become part of the United States, however. Maybe, even if we do not separate, a Western Separatist party (even with only 5 or 6 federal seats) would sent a strong message to Ontario. It should make them think twice before they slaughter the "Gold Egg Laying Goose". Keep this movement going !

To separate ourselves from eastern Canada is a good idea, as it would be one way of extracating BC from the nefarious "free trade" agreements foisted on us by the federal government. These agreements have little to do with trade, and everything to do with investment, and under them BC has much to lose, and nothing to gain.
However, I cannot look at the concept of separation through rose-colored glasses; there will be risks; are we willing to take them? Our good "friend" and neighbour to the south would not be pleased with such a movement, since these agreements signed by the federal government have given the US the right to exploit our resources. The US is bound to interfere; food for thought.

I only disagree with two points on your web site. First, the U.S.A. is not interested in our natural resources unless they can get them for the cheapest price possible. You also forgot to mention on your web site the quota bull-shit the forest companies in B.C. have to put up with.

Secondly, I don't think that our "native brothers and sisters" should have anything to do with the self-government of a new country. They have been free-loading off of Canada for the last 100 years. My point can best be illustrated by research into the current aboriginal problems in Burns Lake. As well, I find it interesting that 90% of the native population in B.C. pay zero taxes on things ranging from vehicles to common goods and services, so what makes you think that all this will change with a separation of B.C?

Just a couple comments... let's not screw around like Quebec with referendums, consulting federal rules etc., let us go back to the original deal of Confederation and annul our entry into Confederation based on the promises that have not been delivered or have been retracted (i.e. --conditions of railroad connection and rates?). Let's not fool around! Let us announce to the rest of Canada on January 1, 2002 that we are gone! So I guess we agree on that one. Next, why not join the US with a payout per citizen of BC (not an original suggestion, you know) and join with an economic neighbour that is desirous of our natural resources, and at present, controls when and where and for how much we will sell those natural resources. This province will boom with either an association, or assimilation into the US., however union will give us many benefits that the US provides annually to their states and to private business. One thing an independent BC will be vulnerable to will be coersion and manipulation by foreign powers ( Ottawa included.). One objection I have heard to this is 'we would have to give up Medicare'. Oh my God, no, not that! Give up the badly managed atrociously expensive dinosaur system that the federal government has used and plundered like their own private treasury fund. Anyway, back to the point - if the US paid us to unite with them, we would be able to afford the best medical treatment in the world using only a small portion of the interest on the money allotted to us. And we would have access to research and development funds for our universities, where our 'brains' could now congregate, instead of going south of 'the border'. Anyway, nice to see you have a page up and running, I know we share the same vision. Hope to see you soon in an independent BC. By the way, I think the Indian issues were originally supposed to be handled by the FEDERAL government, but for some reason this seems to be handed off to us. Hmmmm...... is there a pattern here?
- L.P.

Separating B C from the west, and joining forces with the U S, is not in BC's best interest. The US wants us for our resourses and nothing else. There is talk of a new railway that will use PG as a port for a rail line that will open up to Alaska and then to Russia. Russia is rich in its timber and resourses, and if the U S can't get what they want from us, then they will go through us to get it regardless of what we say. Our federal government is considering this. The US has already kicked in 6 million dollars to research the possibility and is wanting Canada to participate. By separating, we would not have a better health care system, or unsermounted wealth. If we are to stand on our own two feet, then it must be without the US interference and should include all of western Canada. If anything at all, this would send Ottawa a very clear message that we are willing to stand on our own. I also feel that northern B C should be its own entity. Victoria does not recognize that the northern communities exist. Yes we have a commisioner (ha ha) that is there to act in our best interests; however, he (Backhouse) has done nothing but look pretty on his high horse and sip tea. This is Victoria's attempt at making us feel wanted and appreciated. What a Joke ! Western Canada should unite and use all their resources as a tool to become one of the richest countries in the world.

Without thinking, the idea of separation from Canada sounds good, but after a few thoughts I feel that if we were able to make a few changes we would not have to take such a drastic step. I think that our federal ridings (is that the word?) need to be changed so that the east (mainly Ontario) does not hold Canada's future in their hands. With most of the votes coming from only three provinces, we in the west, are beat before we even vote. It is very easy for those three provinces to be spoon fed by the existing federal government so that they would be fools to vote for someone else. I feel that until this can be changed the west has little chance of having a voice in federal government. If this can not in any way be done, than I am open to seriously looking at a separation, but I would like the split to be at the Sask.-Manitoba border. I don't think Alberta or Saskatchewan are getting any better a deal from the feds than we are. I think we need to take a second look at the Free Trade agreement too and admit that we are very close to being run by the US. That needs to be changed as well.

Lets hope our friends in Alberta will join us. I am with you 100% providing it's your intention to form a pure republic with the medium of exchange created by the people and not by banks. Where every citizen enjoys common law rights and receives a basic living from the government. Where government is prohibited by law from borrowing.

I don't mind the 'separate from Canada business' but you shouldn't establish a political adgenda to participation. For example, the native rights thing. This is an issue that both unites, and divides, people. Why promote this when your adjenda is to separate? Highlight that and all the reasons why we need to leave. But throw in the 'native', or any other issue, and you alienate people from the priority which is to separate. These things can work themselves out once we are gone. You have to attract as many people as possible.

I have come to the regrettable conclusion--which never in my lifetime did I think would happen--that separation from Canada is in fact the only way to go. I just posted a discussion on the One Ten West site (www.freebconline.org), in which I said that the old Canada that I grew up in --the sentimental, flag-waving, Centennial-year 1967, Russia-Canada hockey series-- is DEAD AND GONE! You can try to bring it back, you can try to revive it, but IT'S DEAD! Where I live now is in an economic colony controlled by a tyrant in Ottawa. The last election proved that IN FACT WE ALREADY ARE SEPARATED, and it's never going to change! More and more people are going to realize this as time goes by, and this movement could become extremely powerful.
